The Santa Cruz Basilica is situated at K.B.Jacob road in Fort Kochi and is one of the eight Basilicas in India. The right time to view this basilica is from October to March.
In 1558, Pope Paul IV elevated the Santa Cruz church to the status of a Cathedral. In 1984, Pope John Paul II elevated it further to the rank of a Basilica keeping the historic importance of the Cathedral in mind.
In the exterior of this church there are beautiful carved wooden panels and pulput as well as two lofty spires. In the interior of the church there are several Italian paintings on the walls, frescoes and murals.
On the ceiling, there are some paintings that portray the scenes from the life of Christ. The history of this church starts with the arrival of Portuguese missionaries. In 1795, it was partially damaged by the British and later rebuilt.
Currently, it has artistic impressiveness and outstanding architecture as well as colors of the gothic style. Due to this, it is famous all over the world as a place of worship and devotion and a center of historical significance.
