Kottayam can be referred to as a city located in Kerala, an Indian state. It is Kottayam district’s administrative capital as well. Kottayam is well-known as a significant trading center with regards to commercial crops and species; rubber, in particular. It’s also headquarters of ‘Kerala Print media’ like ‘Deepika’ and ‘Malayala Manorama group’.
Kottayam holds the credit for becoming the 1st Indian city to have achieved around 90% of literacy in the year 1989. Moreover, Kottayam district went on to become India’s 1st tobacco-free district.
This city is better known as ‘Akshara Nagan’, meaning the ‘city of letters’; considering contribution of it to literature and print media. Kottayam’s average elevation is 9 feet from sea-level. This place stands on ‘Meenachil River’ that has been formed from numerous streams in Western Ghats within ldukki district. Alluvial soil is found over here. Type of vegetation: moist deciduous and tropical evergreen.
The population as per census conducted in the year 2001 was 60725.
