Kovalam is known for its beaches and so most of the tourist activities are related to the beaches. Being topless or posing nude is not allowed on any beaches and swimmers are expected to wear decent swim-wear.

It is not unusual to find a few of people staring at you when you bathe! Some may even request you for a joint photo. Be aware of the beggars who roam on the beach-side roads.

They may appear intimidating when in groups and its best to avoid them. Some fruit-sellers on the beach have known to trick foreign customers and demand very high prices compared to the usual market rate.

Buy fruits from a proper fruit-stand. Numerous masseurs also gather on the beaches asking if you need their service. Always ask for an authentic license issued by the tourism department before dealing with them.

The undercurrents of the sea can get quite strong and rough and it is advisable to be cautious when you venture slightly away from the shore.

There is life-guard present on most of the beaches who will whistle when he thinks you are crossing the ‘safe zone’. Pay heed to his instructions.
