The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary has an area of 777 square kilometers out of which 360 square kilometers are a thick evergreen forest.
In 1978, this sanctuary was declared as a Tiger Reserve. The sanctuary is primarily known for the diversity in scenic beauty and wildlife. Visitors from all over the world are enticed towards this place.
The Mullaperiyar Dam built on the Periyar River results in the formation of a marvelous artificial lake. Large herds of wild elephants come to this lake.
Pullumedu is a hill town that is 43 kilometers from Thekkady. Here, one can view the velvet lawns and rare flora and fauna.
At Sabarimala, is the famous Sree Ayyappa Temple. This can be seen from Pullumedu. The Makara Joythi illuminations can also be viewed.
As Pullumedu is a section of the restricted forest zone, special permission has to be procured from the Wildlife Preservation Officer to visit this place.
The Mangla Devi Temple is situated at a distance of 15 kilometers from Thekkady. This ancient temple is a beautiful illustration of the traditional Kerala type of architecture.
Every year, the Chithra Pournima festival is held at this temple.
