Varkala Beach lies 54 km to the north of Thiruvananthapuram and is one of the quieter beaches of Kerela. The mineral springs near the beach are popular tourist attractions as the springs are believed to have medicinal properties which heal the people who bathe and drink their water.
The beach is also known as the Papanasam beach as it is said to wash away the sins of the devotees who come to bathe in its waters. There is a nature cure center here which is visited by tourists while taking the Kerela Backwater tours.
The sunset at Varkala Beach is a magnificent sight as the sea has a tinge of crimson and vermilion colors against the golden setting of the sun. Varkala is also a popular pilgrimage spot and people come to visit the Sree Janardhana Swamy temple and offer ‘Vavu Bali’, at the Varkala Beach in the honor of their departed relatives.
