Padmanabhapuram Palace is situated inside the Padmanabhapuram Fort, which is about fifty-km from Thiruvananthpuram, Kerala.
It was constructed in 1601 AD by Iravipillai Iravivarma Kulasekhara Perumal, the ruler of Travancore. It is considered as a fine example of traditional Kerala-architectural style.
The palace consists of number of structures. Mantrasala was the King’s Council chamber and is the most beautiful part of the complex. Beautiful and delicate lattice work can be observed around the chamber.
The floor texture and finish in this chamber could not be replicated in any other construction. Nataksala or the Hall of Performance has solid granite pillars and a shiny black floor. A wooden enclosure is provided with peep-holes for woman from the royal household to watch and enjoy the performances.
Thai Kottaram or Mother’s Palace is the oldest construction in the palace. It has an Ekantha Mandapam or solitude chamber which has fine wood carvings. The central 4-storied building was mainly used as a worship chamber and contains the king’s bedroom.
Thekee kottaram or the southern palace is over four-hundred years old which now operates as a heritage museum.
