Puthenmalika (Kuthiramalika) Palace is amongst the legendary museums in the city of Trivandrum. It is situated just one-km away from the Central Railway Station.
It was built by Maharaja Swathi Varma in 1800 AD, to promote the traditional Indian art in its various forms. The king himself was well-known for his love for poetry, music and arts.
It is built in a typical Travancore-style of architecture, with finely detailed woodcarvings. Due to its legendary architectural style, the palace is designated as one of the heritage sites of Kerala.
The name of the palace, Kuthiramalika (the horse-bungalow), originates from the uniquely designed roof-beams, which resemble the horse-face. The walls of the palace are decorated with royal paintings from ancient times.
Exquisite collections of the imperial family such as metal idols, weapons and jewelry items are also on display here. A numbers of wooden sculptures can also be found within the palace. It is open for visitors on all days.
