Leh: Attractions and more...

The Leh Palace has eight storeys and is similar to the Potala Palace of Lhasa. It still belongs to the Ladakhi royal family.

The Chamba Temple cannot be found easily. It is essential to enquire about it in the second row of shops. This is a one roomed shrine that has a huge icon of Maitreya, the Buddha to come.

In the bazaar, at the top of the street, one can see the Jami Masjid. This has been painted in green and white color. Through one of the lanes, it is possible to reach the old town. Except the electric cables, nothing has changed in the town.

In the Sankar Gompa, maximum twenty monks live and only some of them are in permanent residence. This Gompa is open to the public from 7 am to 10am and from 5 pm to 7pm.

This monastery is fairly active. The monks welcome the visitors and offer than one yak butter tea. This Gompa can be reached by foot.

The Leh Gompa has a statue of a seated Buddha that is three storeys high. This Buddha is flanked on the right side by Avalokitesvara and on the left side by Manjushri.
