The Kandariya Mahadev Temple is the biggest and most decorated Hindu temple of the group that is found at Khajuraho. It is preserved from the medieval period in India.
This temple was constructed by Vidyadhara, who is arguably one of the greatest kings of Chandela. The temple is the largest of the Western group of temples.
This temple was built approx. in 1000 BC. The shikhara or main spire has a height of 31 meters. It is said to depict Mount Meru, which is the holy mountain of Lord Shiva.
The main spire is surrounded by 84 miniature spires. Inside the temple one can find the Shiva linga (symbol of Lord Shiva), that is made of marble.
This temple is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. It is also a part of the UNESCO world heritage site at Khajuraho.
