Nearly 385 miles to the south-east of New Delhi, one can reach the village of Khajuraho at the Chhatarpur district in Madhya Pradesh.
The group of monuments of Khajuraho has been included in the UNESCO world heritage site. At Khajuraho, there are a very large group of medieval Jain and Hindu temples that are known for their erotic sculptures. Some of these temples are dedicated to the Jain pantheon.
The remainder is to the Hindu gods like Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma and many forms of Devi like the Devi Jagadamba temple. These temples are according to the Panchayatna layout.
This plan has four subordinate shrines on four corners and the major shrine is at the center of the podium. There are secondary shikharas that gather to form an apt base for the main shikhara.
These temples have sculptures that appear very realistic and are an object of study in the current scenario. In the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, a Saraswathi temple has been built and this is modeled after the Khajuraho temples.
