The Lakshmana Temple is a huge structure that is dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
This temple was built around 930 to 950 A.D. and is one of the earliest stone temples.
This temple is remarkably well-preserved. As per an inscription on this temple, this was constructed by King Yasovarman in order to install a Vaikuntha-Vishnu image given to him by Devapala, the Pratihara overlord.
This image was brought from Tibet, where the faction of worshipping Vishnu in the Vaikuntha avatar was very famous.
The outer wall of this temple is beautifully carved and every inch reveals the artistic flight of fantasy of the sculptor.
There are two open pavilions or mandapas in front of the temple.
Out of these the one towards the south is the Varaha mandapa that has a huge image of the standing Varaha (the boar incarnation of Vishnu to save the earth from primeval floods).
