Often referred to the heart of India owing to its geographic location, and with its capital as Bhopal, and having been created in 1950 from former British Provinces and princely States, Madhya Pradesh was originally the largest state in India. With a population of over 60 million, and formerly a part of the Mughal rule under Akbar till the 17th Century, the state of Madhya Pradesh comprises of several linguistically and culturally distinct regions. Today Madhya Pradesh represents the great river basin of India and acts as a watershed for a number of rivers, in addition to this, the catchments of many Indian rivers lie in this state. Like most Northern states in India, Madhya Pradesh has a subtropical climate, and has a hot dry summer starting from (April to June), followed by the monsoon rains (July to September) and a cool and relatively dry winter.
