The Museum
A site museum has been maintained at Sanchi by the Archaeological Survey of India where the Lion Capital of the Ashokan pillar as well as metallic objects utilized by the monks is exhibited.
The Ashoka Pillar
The Ashoka Pillar is situated near the southern gateway of the Great Stupa and is renowned for the artistic proportions and the elegant structural balance.
Great Stupa No.1
The Great Stupa No.1 is the oldest stone monument in India and has a height of 16.4 meters and diameter of 36.5 meters and on the top of the stupa there is a hemispherical dome. Around the stupa there is a procession path which has become smooth as several pilgrims have treaded on it for several centuries.
Stupa No. 2
The Stupa No.2 is located on the edge of a hill and the most important characteristic is the stone balustrade that rings it.
The Gateways
On the southern gateway, the birth of Buddha is disclosed through a sequence of rich carvings. The northern gateway has a wheel of law that shows the miracles linked with Buddha as explained in the jatakas. The seven incarnations of Buddha are depicted on the western gateway. The eastern gateway demonstrates the young prince Gautama abandoning his father’s palace on the road to enlightment.
