The Mahakaleshwara Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas (main temples of Lord Shiva) in India. This temple has icons of Omkareshwar Shiva, Nandi (Lord Shiva’s Bull), Kartikeya, Parvati and Ganesh.
Kaliadeh Palace
The Kaliadeh Palace is located on the banks of the river Kshipra. This palace has a central dome which is an impressive illustration of Persian architecture. In the long corridors of the palace there are two Persian inscriptions which are an evidence of Emperor Akbar’s and Jehangir’s visit to this place.
The Pindaris damaged this temple but Maharaja Madhav Rao Scindia I the Maharaja of Ujjain and Gwalior restored it to the present state in 1920.
This grandiose palace has a good backdrop in the form of a river flowing on either side of the palace as well as artificial channels and tanks with water flowing through them.
Bhartrihari Caves
The Bhartrihari Caves are located close to the temple of Gadkalika above the bank of the Kshipra. It is believed that the step brother of Vikramaditya called Bhartrihari renounced worldly life and lived and meditated in these caves.
It is said that he was a great scholar and poet with Nitishatak, Vairagyashatak and Shringarshatak as his works.
