The Elephanta Island is at a distance of 10 kilometers from the Gateway of India in Mumbai harbor.
The Portuguese found a statue of an elephant near this island and hence the name of this island. There are boat services that begin from the Gateway of India, which reach the island in an hour. These caves can be visited at any time during the year. However, the monsoon must be avoided as the boat services might be suspended.
On the island, there are stairs that lead to the Elephants Caves. These caves have become a UNESCO World Heritage Site, from the year 1987.
Some of the rock-cut temples have been created in the 5th century C.E. and some date back to the 9th to 13th century. The temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva. These splendid caves comprise of several reliefs and sculptures. Some icons in these caves are dedicated to the Manyakheta or the imperial Rashtrakutas.
