The Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Market is a popular market in South Mumbai. It was earlier called as Crawford Market in the memory of Arthur Crawford, the first Municipal Commissioner of Mumbai.
This market is towards the west of the J.J. Flyover, towards the north of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and opposite the Mumbai Police headquarters. Wholesale fruits, vegetables and poultry are sold here.
On one end of the market there exists a pet store. The construction of this building is a mixture of the Gothic and Norman architectural styles. Lockwood Kipling, Rudyard Kipling’s father, designed the stone fountains and friezes on the outside entrance that display Indian farmers.
The area of the market is 22,471 square meters of which the building has occupied 5,515 square meters.
This structure has a skylight awning that is 15 meters high that enables to light up the marketplace by sunlight. Coarse buff colored Kurla stone is used in the construction.
