The Mumbai Suburban Railway system handles more than 6.1 million passengers everyday and this amount is more than half of the everyday daily passenger capacity of the Indian railways.

These trains commonly known as “local trains” or “locals” represent the maximum passenger density of any urban railway system in the entire world.

This railway system from Virar to Borivali and Kasara to Titwala are spread over a distance of 464 kilometers. There are 171 train sets that may be 9 car or 12 car composition that produce 2342 train services in a single day.

The Western railway has two corridors that start from Churchgate terminus and travel a distance of 120 kilometers parallel to the west coast to reach Dahanu Road.

In case of the Central Line, there are two corridors that start from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus to travel a distance of 54 kilometers to reach Kalyan and from here bifurcate to the north east direction to reach Kasara, which is at a distance of 67 kilometers and to the south east direction to reach Khopoli which is at a distance of 61 kilometers.

The Harbor Line starts from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and reaches to Andheri, Thane and Panvel.
