Elephanta Caves, one of the major tourist’s attractions of Maharashtra is situated in metropolitan city of Mumbai. It is located at a distance of 10km from the Gateway of India. The rocks cut architecture of the cave are as old as 5th century A.D. The Elephanta caves are also declared as World Heritage site by UNESCO.
There are altogether seven caves spread on two hills. The focal point of the caves is magnificent rock cut sculptures of Lord Shiva. These attract attention of huge number of architects and tourists from around the world. One can reach Elephanta caves by one-hour ferry ride. The island of Elephanta is picturesque and quiet with green foliage and lots of monkeys. Tourists can also enjoy viewing sunset while returning in a ferry ride.
