The Gateway of India is situated close to the waterfront in South Mumbai.

This monument is a basalt arch that has a height of 26 meters. Traditionally, the first monument seen by visitors arriving by boat is the Gateway of India and hence the name.

It was built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary. The Gateway steps lead down to the waterfront, where one may choose a boat ride to Elephanta Island.

The Gateway is built from yellow basalt and reinforced concrete. Indo-Saracenic architectural style elements are derived from the Muslim architectural styles of 16th century. The diameter of the central dome is fifteen meters.

At the highest point, this dome is 26 meters above the ground. This structure was built at the expenditure of 0.05 million USD (INR 2.1 million) by the Government of India.

Due to scarcity of funds, an approach road could not be built. Due to this, the structure is at an angle to the road that leads to it.
