The Powai Lake is an artificial lake constructed by the British in 1890, towards the west of the Indian Institute of Technology in the northern suburb of Mumbai and the name is derived from Framaji Kavasji Powai Estate, who was a Parsi merchant.
As this lake is situated 25 kilometers from Central Mumbai, it is a perfect getaway from the hectic life of the city and although it was a source of drinking water for the natives of Mumbai however in the recent past the water has been declared as unfit for drinking.
As this lake has a pleasant and serene atmosphere, a number of tourists are attracted towards this place and it is a great picnic spot for people who desire to enjoy the bliss of solitude.
The Powai Lake is an expanse of water at the side of a motorable road and can be easily approached from Andheri, Santa Cruz, Kurla, Sion and King’s Circle.
