The current atmosphere of Colaba is created by the Gateway of India and the Taj Mahal Palace & Tower hotel. The Gateway of India has a height of 26 meters and is built using yellow basalt and reinforced concrete.
It is so named as the visitors of Mumbai arriving by boat would first see this place in the city. The Tower means the Taj Intercontinental hotel. The Palace and the Tower are two disparate constructions, built in varying architectural designs at different times.
The tower wing was conceived in 1973, by Melton Bekker, the famous American Architect. Other places worth visiting in Colaba are the art deco style Regal Theater and three cafes, namely, the Leopold, Royal and Mondegar.
The southern region of Colaba is a military cantonment. On the reclaimed land, a huge Navy Nagar has been built, which encompasses the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research which is a leading scientific institution in India.
