A small hill in South Mumbai where one can find attractions like the popular hanging Gardens, Kamala Nehru Gardens, Walkeshwar Temple, Banganga Tank is called as the Malabar Hill and at a height of 50 meters, it is the highest point in the city center.
The region of Mumbai close to this hill is also called ‘Malabar Hill’ and this is regarded as the elite residential area of Mumbai where several film celebrities, business tycoons reside and the official residences of the Chief Minister and Governor of Maharashtra are located.
As there is an unhindered sight of Back Bay together with Chowpatti beach at the front and Nariman Point skyline at the back, the real estate value at this place is one of the costliest in the world.
While Mumbai was developing, it was flooded by pirates from the Malabar Coast in Kerala and to safeguard the city, a lookout was constructed on the hill to have a total view of the sea approaches and hence the name ‘Malabar Hill.’
