Pune (also pronunced Poona) is the second largest city in the state of Maharashtra in Western India and the eighth most populous metropolitan area in India with over 5 million people.
Pune is situated 560 metres above sea level and has its name derived from a Sanskrit word meaning ‘City of Virtue’.
After this historic town where several important battles were fought, known for its educational facilities and large number of students (also known as the Boston of the East), was brought under the control of British India in 1817, it served as a Cantonment town as well as the "monsoon capital" of the Bombay Presidency.
It has now grown into a major commercial block within India, with manufacturing and Information Technology contributing to a major portion of the cities revenues.
The temperature in Pune is tropical wet and dry with summer months from March – May; Monsoons lasting till October and Winters commencing by around November.
