Shaniwar Wada was the residence of the Peshwa rulers. In 1730 AD, the foundation of this stately mansion was laid by Bajirao I and the construction was complete in 1732 AD.

The cost of building this structure in that era was 383 USD (INR 16,120). The successors of Bajirao I made some additions to this building like court halls, gates and fortification walls with bastions. In its heyday, this was a seven storied structure.

Currently, only the fortification walls that have five gateways as well as nine bastions can be seen. These gates are called Dilli Darwaza (Delhi gate), Narayan Darwaza, Ganesh Darwaza, Khidki Darwaza and Alibahadur or Mastani Darwaza.

There is a sixteen petal lotus-shaped fountain which is an evidence of the wonderful works of the bygone era. At this place, there is a light and sound show everyday.

The Marathi show is from 7:15 pm to 8:10 pm and the English show is from 8:15 pm to 9:10 pm. The ticket rate is 0.59 USD (INR 25).
