Shillong, also called the ‘Scotland of The East’ is the capital city of the Indian state of Meghalaya, one of the smallest states of the country.
It is located on the Shillong Plateau surrounded by the Khasi Hills, 4,908 ft above sea level.
It experiences a sub-tropical climate and has warm and humid summers and biting cold winters. The monsoon season commences in June and lasts till August. March & April and October & November are the best months to pay a visit to the city.
Shillong houses 260,000 people as per the 2001 census. Maximum population consists of the natives called Khasis.
Shillong is attracting population from all over the country and hence is becoming a cosmopolitan city.
It includes the Marwaris, Bengalis, Assamese, Biharis and Nepalis.
Until a few years ago Shillong used to be a small village. It has drastically developed into a big town.
