Aizawl is the largest and the capital city of the Indian state of Mizoram. It is also coined as the ‘City of Highlanders’.
Towards the north of the Tropic of Cancer, it is situated on a height of 3500 ft above sea level. Towards the east of the city is the Tuirial river valley and towards its west is the Tlawng river valley.
Aizawl also has many rapids, hilly terrains, meandering streams, deep gorges and great flora and fauna.
The weather is cool during summers. Rains commence in the month of May and last till September. Winters are cold and the city remains covered with fog until sunrise.
Aizawl is home to 229,714 inhabitants as per the 2001 census. It has rich tribal culture owing to the Mizo tribal people and exotic natural beauty like those of the Himalayas.
It is well known for its local handicrafts.
