During the reign of Shahjahan, a series of shops were built in the shape of a half moon. Along with time, the shops grew from this nucleus and a prosperous trading center was created that has several bylanes in all directions.

In the past, only this region was called as Chandni Chowk. However, gradually this center expanded and the entire region from the Red Fort to Fatehpuri was termed as Chandni Chowk.

For a period of three and half centuries, this area is called by the same name. However, the alteration is that the leisure-filled mode of shopping has been substituted by a hustle and bustle. Instead of traditional items, there are modern commodities.

Despite all the changes which have occurred, this place has retained its age old charm. Chandni Chowk had reached its pinnacle during the era of Shahjahan. Traders, not only from India but also from foreign lands chose this region for business.

The ornate shops exhibited goods like arrays of textiles, fruits, hookas, jewelry and also animals and bird.
