India is a country of diversity. The variety Indian culture presents, can be tasted in some of its popular dishes. The vegetarian delicacies are as popular as the non vegetarian ones here. Anyone visiting India should satisfy their appetite with the following favorite and popular dishes available in all food outlets:
1. Kebabs- This is an excellent wholesome snack that will delight any gourmet. It can be vegetarian or non vegetarian. Mixed with spicy masalas, the kebabs can be tasted in grilled, roasted, baked or fried form. It is served with chips or vegetables and sauces.
2. Parathas- This is pan fried Indian flat bread. Crispy and flaky, they go well with most Indian dishes be it a gravied curry or a dry stir-fry. This is north Indian specialty, made of any desired stuffing like potato, paneer, meat and several others.
3. Biriyanis- Made with rice, this is a popular dish for main meals. Biriyanis can be vegetarian or non vegetarian. Hyderabadi Biryani is one of the most sought after variants of the popular biryani. It has its origins from Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh. Hyderabadi Biryani is a non-vegetarian dish and its main ingredients are meat, rice and spices.
4. Dosas- It is a crispy savory pancake from South India and a staple food in its home region. In the rest of the country, Dosas are hugely popular. Served with chutney and sambar, dosa is another must have Indian dish.
5. Samosas- This is a very popular Indian snack. Quintessentially, it is similar to pastry such as fried empanada (popular in rural area) with spicy boiled potato stuffing inside crispy flour dough served with spicy chutney. A popular non-vegetarian variant of this classic dish would have spicy ground meat (usually lamb) instead or along with potatoes.
6. Indian sweets- Most popular Indian sweets or Mithai, include Gulab Jamun, Rasgulla, Ladoos, Burfi, Kheer, Jalebi, Peda, Kulfi, Rabri, Sandesh, Ras Malai and Halwa. Indian desserts are very tempting and mouth watering. Be it a scorching summer or a bone clattering winter Indian mithai is always too difficult to resist. A sumptuous meal is always incomplete without sweet dish.
