The Jama Masjid is the main mosque in Old Delhi. The term “Jama Masjid” refers to the weekly gathering observed on Friday. It is also called as the “Masjid-i-Jahan Numa” which means “the mosque which commands a view of the world.”

The courtyard of this mosque has space for twenty five thousand worshippers. In a closet at the north gate, there are many relics, one of which is the Quran written on deer skin.

From the east, south and north, there are three flights of steps that lead to the courtyard. These are built of red sandstone. Towards the south, there are 33 steps and towards the north, there are 39 steps.

The royal entrance is toward the eastern side and there are 35 steps. These steps are used by street entertainers, shops and food stalls. The eastern side of the mosque is used as a bazaar for birds and poultry.

The dimensions of the mosque are 80 meters X 27 meters. There are two huge minarets that have a height of 41 meters and each of these have 130 steps.
