Konark, is the seat of the well-known Sun Temple, and is situated at about thirty-five km from Puri and sixty-five km from Bhubaneshwar. The Sun Temple, or Black Pagoda, was built by King Narasimhadeva in the 13th-Century mainly from black granite.
It is a well-known Brahman sanctuary and listed amongst the World Heritage Sites. It is located in natural surroundings, abundant with trees that grow on sandy-soils.
The temple is constructed to resemble the chariot of lord Surya and symbolizes the grand stride of the Sun God. Two lion figurines guard the temple gate. The temple is heavily decorated with carvings in stone, which include several geometrical and floral patterns.
Many humans, semi-divine and divine figures are depicted in sensuous attires, which are believed to be derived from the Kama-Sutra. A part of the temple now lies in ruins and the sculptures are stored in the Sun Temple Museum, which is governed by the Archeological Survey of India.
