Surya Temple situated in Konark is popularly known as the Konark Sun Temple. Located at about 35-km from Puri in Orissa, this is current a World Heritage Site as designated by UNESCO.

King Narasimhadeva built this magnificent structure in the thirteenth century and Black-granite was mainly used for its construction. Lush green trees surrounding the temple help in enhancing its beauty.

The construction of the temple is in such a way that it resembles the grand stride of the Sun God (Hence the name). Lord Surya situated on a chariot appears to be riding 24 royal horses.

There are 2 lion-figures which guard the temple entrance. There are impressive carvings on the walls of the temple, mainly in the form of floral and geometrical patters. Some drawings are even inspired from the ancient Indian Kama-Sutra.

With passage of time, the glory of the temple has somewhat faded and some parts lie in ruins. These partial sculptures are stored safely in the Sun Temple Museum, which is well governed by the Archeological Survey of India.
