The prime attraction of Puri is the Jagannath Temple.
According to a legend, King Indradyumna was ruling this kingdom dreamed of Lord Jagannath and hence decided to construct a temple in his honor. This temple was built after overcoming several difficulties.
This temple is a super architectural accomplishment of the period in which it was built. The temple has tall shikharas or spires. The pillars are decorated with scenes from the life of Lord Krishna.
In the North-East direction of the Jagannath temple is the Gundicha temple. This was constructed in the 16th and 17th century. The design of this temple is different from other temples in Orissa.
There is a dome in this temple and Vishnu’s wheel is placed on the top. Lord Jagannath resides for seven days in this temple during the rath Yatra festival.
At the Swargadwar, a Vaishnav prophet merged with the sea and passed away. He was Sri Chaintanya Mahaprabhu. It is believed that if one takes a dip in the sea at this place, the doors to heaven would be opened.
