Amritsar, in Punjab, is the spiritual and cultural centre of Sikhism. Located in the north-western part of India, the city is home to the famous Golden Temple. With a population of around 1,100,000 inhabitants, Amritsar is one of the most ancient and fascinating cities of India.
The city has an extreme climate with four distinct seasons—winter, summer, monsoon, and post-monsoon. The best time to visit is from October to March. Historically, Amritsar was dominated by Sikhs, and a large number of Sikh monuments can still be found throughout the city. The city is home to Jallianwala Bagh, one of the most important locations in the history of Indian independence.
The culture of Amritsar is deeply influenced by the Pahari culture. Metalwork, painting, wood carving, and embroidery are important cultural elements.Explore map
