Amritsar with its rich political history and architectural excellence is one of the most important tourist locations in India. Jallianwala Bagh, home to the Jallianwala Bagh tragedy, is a site of great political significance. Also, when in Amritsar, visit the Summer Palace of Maharaja Ranjit Singh located in the middle of Ram Bagh (a beautiful garden) and the Harike Wetland, a national wildlife sanctuary.
While visiting Amritsar, be sure to try the traditional Amritsar meal. Start with the famous lassi, moving on to puri-aloo, aloo parathas and the famous butter chicken.
Baisakhi, usually in the month of April, is the most popular festival in Amritsar.
