Keoladeo National Park, formerly known as Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, is situated in Rajasthan in India. It displays over thousands of rare and endangered bird species such as the Siberian Crane, which visits the park during the winter seasons.
More then 230 varieties of birds are reported to have made the park their home. It has since then become a major tourist attraction, attracting plenty of ornithologists in the hibernal season.
It is also designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The site was named after a Keoladeo (Lord Shiva) temple located within its boundaries.
The park was initially a hunting ground for the local maharajas. Many duck-shoots were organized here to honor the British viceroys. After the independence of India in 1947 many of these local kingdoms were dissolved and the land came under the government sanction.
In 1982, a ban on cattle grazing was employed. Besides the Siberian Crane, many rare bird species like gulls, northern shovelers, ruddy shelducks, garganey, coots, common Prichard and tufted ducks can be found within the park premises, especially during winters.
