In the past the Chitra Mahal was a fabulous garden palace that had small pools containing exotic fish and fountains but currently has overgrown grass and shrubs.

This structure is called as the Chitra (painting) Mahal as there are beautiful murals on the walls that are present as in the 18th century Bundi was a beehive of miniatures.

Identical to Kota, Bundi endorsed miniature paintings and particularly those that had the images of Radha and Krishna in a specific color combination of maroon, green and blue.

Some other types of miniatures were of gods and goddesses, elephants, battle scenes and lovers. All these paintings had a particular delicacy that was peculiar to Bundi.

The Chitra Mahal has an inner chamber called as the Chitrashala which was constructed as per the orders from Umed Singh and this place is not affected by moisture or sunlight and hence the paintings in this chamber appear to glow similar to the original work of the painters.

The ceiling and the walls of the chamber are painted and these wall paintings form a dramatic panorama.
