In Rajasthan the Garh Palace is a place different from the usual palaces in the aspect that there are several small palaces constructed around the main royal residence by several rulers over some centuries.

Rao Balwant Singh
began the construction of the Garh palace in 1580. This has been built on a terrace on a small hill and some parts of this Garh are currently in ruins while some have maintained their royal splendor amidst overgrown grass.

As this palace complex is surrounded by a wall it looks more like a fort than a spot for leisure. The entrance to this Garh palace is formed by two large gates which can be reached after a steep climb.

The first towering gate is called the Hazari Pol or Gate of One Thousand. The second gate is called as the Hathia Pol or the Elephant Gate. This was constructed by Rao Ratan Singh (1607-31).

Here there are two trumpeting elephants that form an arch. It is thought that initially these elephants were cast in brass and afterwards were made of concrete and painted in bright colors. From this Hathia Pol one gets access to a courtyard from where there exists an arched façade for stables
