Jaisalmer Fortress is situated on Trikuta Hill and is a great architectural marvel not only in Rajasthan but in the whole of India. It was built in 1156 AD by Rawal Jaisal who was a Rajput ruler of the Bhatti clan.
It has witnesses a number of battles since then. The huge sand-stone wall of the fortress appears to be tawny-lion color during the daytime while they almost magically transform into a honey-gold color as the sun sets.
The fort is still inhabited by about a quarter of the city’s population. Many of these residents have converted their homes into small restaurants or food-stalls. Some merchant’s mansions, called Havelis are also located here.
Numerous attractions inside the fortress include Raj Mahal, Laxminath Temple and several Jain Temples. The royal palace also acts as a museum. The site is filled with number of tourists and travelers, at any given time.
