Bada Bagh, meaning ‘Big Garden’ is situated on Ramgarh Road, half-way between Jaisalmer and Lodhruva in Rajasthan, India. Maharawal Jait Singh commissioned the founding of the Bagh in the 16th-Century which was carried forward by his son Lunakaran, after his death.
There is a dam, a tank and garden in the Bagh premises. There is a tall pillar, known as Givardhan Stambha, located near the Bagh. Names of the water tank (Jaitsar) and dam (Jait Bandh) are engraved onto it.
The Jait Bandh is a massive structure which is about 350-ft wide and made of solid blocks of stone, including the step-wells. The dam has a 5-tier drainage system, known locally as Bhanvaria.
Besides the dam, the Bagh is famous for its attractive chhatris (Cenotaphs) of the local rulers. The sizes of these chhatries vary according to the social status of the person, the King’s chhatri obviously being the largest one.
They contain emblazoned tablets. Most notable is Maharwal Bairisal’s chhatri. Bada Bagh has a grove of Mango trees and Kanwar Pada is the most notable amongst the gardens.
