Ratnagiri is situated in the south-west part of Maharashtra state and is a port city.
This region experiences heavy rainfall. The fertile and alluvial valleys in this region result in abundant production of Alphonso mangoes, cashew nuts, fruits, coconuts and rice.
Ratnagiri has a warm weather and the humidity is the real problem. In summer, the temperature can increase to more than 38 °C and in winter can fall to almost 10 °C.
The ideal time for visiting this place is from October to March.
As per the 2006 census, the population of Ratnagiri was 70,335.
Some renowned Indians, like Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Dhondo Keshav Karve and Wrangler Raghunath Purushottam Paranjpe were born in the vicinity of Ratnagiri.
