Sawai Madhopur, in Rajasthan, India, is a city that lies to the north-east of Jaipur. Located in the Aravalli Ranges, Sawai Madhopur is renowned for Ranthambore, its wildlife reserve. With a population of not more than 97,000 inhabitants, Sawai Madhopur is a centre of social and cultural activity.
Sawai Madhopur has a subtropical climate, with the three seasons of summer, winter and monsoon. The city remains dry, except during the monsoons. The best time to visit the city is from October to March.
Founded by Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh of Jaipur in 1765 AD, Sawai Madhopur has witnessed several battles and the rise and fall of many rulers.
The city, known for its culture, is home to colourful textile, heavy jewellery, music and folkdance. It is well known for its bandhani and lahriya art, both being beautiful dyeing techniques.
