Shimla is the capital city of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh located in the Himalayas.
It was the summer capital of India during the British colonial rule. It was also coined as ‘Queen of Hills’ by the Englishmen.
Summers are pleasant and cool. Winters are snowy and cold. Snowfall occurs in the month of January.
The city is well known tourist destination.
Shimla has dense forests surrounding it. Trees found in the forests are that of oak, rhododendron, pine and deodar.
The city is home to 721,745 people as per 2001 census. Maximum people are natives of the state, a mixed cosmopolitan crowd of different races and tribes like Gaddis, Gujars, Lahaulis and Kinners.
They follow their own religions and cultures. They speak the Pahadi language, a native dialect.
Apart from tourism which adds up good revenues to city, people in Shimla earn their livelihood mainly from agriculture.
