Srinagar is the capital city of the state of Jammu & Kashmir. It lies on both sides of river Jhelum, also called ‘vyath’ by the natives.
It is bounded by two hills, the Hari Parbat and the Shankar Acharya. It is well known for its houseboats in the lakes.
It has nine old bridges. There are also several Mughal gardens in and around the city.
The climate of Srinagar is warm and pleasant in the summer months from June to August and snowy and cold from December to February. Most preferred time to visit the city is from April to June.
The city houses a population of 894,940 people according to the 2001 census.
There is a special blend of cultural heritage found in the city. The places around the city demonstrate religious and cultural diversities.
Men and women in Srinagar wear the traditional dress called Phiran. People like vegetarian and non-vegetarian food equally with the special herbal flavours of the region.
