Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary is situated in the Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu and is the oldest bird sanctuary in India. The sanctuary has been named after a nearby village which is 75 km from Chennai.
November to February is the ideal time to visit the place and one can see a spectacular sight of herons, pelicans, grebes, open billed stork, darters, cormorants, egrets, spoonbill, Indian moorhen, white ibis, black winged stilts and more.
This is a favorite haunt of ornithologists who camp here for several weeks studying the birds at close quarters. One can watch the spot billed grey pelican move in groups lashing the water to catch their prey or a snake bird and cormorant dive below the water to gobble up a fish.
One can find comfortable accommodation at the adjoining hotels or at the Forest Department Rest House.
