There are private buses running their services around Madurai and to places like Kuttralam, Munnar and Kodaikanal. The average charges to these places are around Rs 175. It is also possible to rent a car and travel around the city. The average car rental to visit places like Thiruparakundram, Naicker Mahal and Palamudurcholai is around Rs.600-650.
