Madurai is the second largest city and cultural capital of the state of Tamil Nadu. For centuries, the city of Madurai has been a center of pilgrimage and learning. Despite being known for the display of cultural legacy, the city has emerged as a commercial hub and producer and exporter of textiles.

There are different places of tourist attractions in the city of Madurai, but it is the well-known Meenakshi Temple that is the hub which attracts worldwide tourists. The magnificent Meenakshi Temple that is spread across six hectares, with its festivities and processions provides a glimpse of the cultural life of the city. The temple exemplifies the Dravidian architecture with large gateways and multi-pillared halls that are covered with images of mythical figures.

The Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam is another attraction worth visiting while touring Madurai. The temple plays a host to the annual float festival celebrated during the months of January and February. The small town of Thirupparankundram situated about 6 kilometers to the southwest of Madurai is famous for the sacred granite hill. Vaigai Dam, a beautiful picnic spot that is popular among local and international tourists. Besides these, Kodaikanal that is located in the Western Ghats is known as a picturesque hill station. Thekkadi Wildlife Sanctuary, Palani Hills and Munnar are other places of interest around the city of Madurai.
