Madurai is the second largest city and cultural capital of the state of Tamil Nadu. For centuries, the city of Madurai has been a center of pilgrimage and learning. Despite being known for the display of cultural legacy, the city has emerged as a commercial hub and producer and exporter of textiles.



There are different places of tourist attractions in the city of Madurai, but it is the well-known Meenakshi Temple that is the hub which attracts worldwide tourists. The magnificent Meenakshi Temple that is spread across six hectares, with its festivities and processions provides a glimpse of the cultural life of the city. The temple exemplifies the Dravidian architecture with large gateways and multi-pillared halls that are covered with images of mythical figures.

The Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam is another attraction worth visiting while touring Madurai. The temple plays a host to the annual float festival celebrated during the months of January and February. The small town of Thirupparankundram situated about 6 kilometers to the southwest of Madurai is famous for the sacred granite hill. Vaigai Dam, a beautiful picnic spot that is popular among local and international tourists. Besides these, Kodaikanal that is located in the Western Ghats is known as a picturesque hill station. Thekkadi Wildlife Sanctuary, Palani Hills and Munnar are other places of interest around the city of Madurai.

The Meenakshi Amman Temple or the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple is a historic Hindu temple which is situated in the holy city of Madurai in Tamil Nadu. The temple is dedicated to God Shiva, seen in the form of Sundareswarar (Beautiful Lord) with his wife, Goddess Parvati, who is in the form of Meenakshi. This historic site is believed to be built back in 7th century and is a vital symbol of Tamil people.
