Sri Meenakshi temple also known as Meenakshi Amman or Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple is situated in the holy city of Madurai in Tamil Nadu.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and goddess Parvati who is in the form of Meenakshi. The temple was built by the Pandya Kings and has a South Indian architectural style.

The inner sanctorum is over 3500 years old and the temple has a massive structure which is 254x237 m which is surrounded by 12 towers or gopurams which are painted and sculptures elaborately.

The Shiva shrine consists of a grand sculpture of the Lord Natraja, which is a dancing form of Shiva with his left foot raised. Outside the temple is a temple of Ganesha called the Mukuruny Vinayakar.

The 1000 Pillar Hall in the temple called Aayiram Kaal Mandapam is of sculptural importance. The Potramarai Kulan or ‘The Pond with the Golden Lily’ lies inside the temple.
