The Gandhi Memorial Museum as it is known was built in the historic Tamukkam Palace of Rani Mangammal of the Naik dynasty, in the honor of Mahatma Gandhi, ‘The Father of the Nation’.
The museum is divided into 5 sections. The 1st one has a special exhibition on India’s fight for freedom along with 265 pictures displaying the history of the Freedom Movement.
The 2nd exhibition has a selection of handicrafts donated by the nearby states of Kerala, Mysore, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The 3rd is a Pictorial Gallery displaying the biography of Mahatma Gandhi with quotations, paintings and photos.
The 4th is the Hall of Relics wherein are preserved some of the original personal belongings of the Great Leader along with a few replicas. The 5th section is the Khadi and Village Industries Section which is situated in the ground floor.
This section displays some of the village industries which were revived by Gandhiji.
