The Lighthouse of Mamallapuram is situated on the beach near the famous Sea-shore temple. It is situated at about five-km from the Tiger-caves and also close-by to the Mahishsurmardini caves.

It is believed to be thousands of years old. On its place, there once was a rocky platform with beautiful carvings. Fires were ignited from its top for guiding ships on the sea to the safety of the port.

The lighthouse then replaced this mechanism. Today, from the top of the lighthouse, one can take breathtaking views of the Mamallapuram city, the waters of the Bengal Bay and the temples situated on the shores.

It is a perfect spot for enjoying the quiet moments away from hustle and bustle of the city. When the tides are high, it is simply amazing to watch how tides hit the walls of the temple.
