The Sea Shore Temple is amongst the great monuments of Mahabalipuram and is designated as one of the World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
Built by king Rajasimha, it is located on the sea shore of Mamallapuram where it is constantly touched by sea-water and winds. The temple is actually a three-in-one complex which has one Vishnu temple and 2 Shiva temples.
There were three Vimanas, one for each temple, but presently the Vimana of Vishnu has crumbled down. These temples were extensively in use for worship.
The compound of the temple contains a huge sculpture of Nandi, the bull. The figure of Vishnu is present in the inner sanctum. To the south of this, there is a large lion sculpture.
A miniature figurine of Mahishasurmardini is carved inside the neck of the animal, within a square cavity. Two attendants are mounted on each side of the animal. Today, this wonderfully constructed temple is considered as an architectural masterpiece.
